Youth Programs: Teen High School Support


Location/facilities:

The July and August program is run by Banff Education Centre before the students join the High School year at one of the 2 local High Schools in Canmore for the September to June school year.

To see the information on the Pre-High School programs offered in July and August, please see the Teen English + Activity - Summer or the Teen English Intensive programs.

Canmore Collegiate High School and Our Lady Of The Snows Catholic Academy are the 2 High Schools in Canmore. Both schools offer academic study programs and students receive high quality instruction from certified Alberta teachers.

These 2 schools are in different school boards and have different curriculums, etc. Banff Education Centre works together with these High Schools to offer this program, but is also a different school with completely different directors.

Depending on the high school, students will start high school the first week of September or the last week of August.

Canmore Collegiate High School

International Program students use state‐of‐the‐art technology to enhance learning. Mathematics, Science, Language Arts and Technology courses use modern computer labs and fully equipped workshops. The school has a fully equipped gymnasia with weight training facilities. The physical and outdoor education programs utilize the community swimming pools, golf courses, curling rink and the Canadian Rockies for climbing, hiking and outdoor education.

Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Academy

Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Academy is in a new school building (Newly opened January 2009). It is a dynamic and growing school in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Students are challenged to excel academically within a nurturing and caring faith-filled environment.

Start Date:

We only accept students starting on July 2nd, 2012 and studying for the full 12 months.

Age:

We accept students 14 years and older.

Town:

Canmore, Alberta (5 minutes outside of Banff National Park).

July and August Programs

In July and August, students have a choice of:
• Teen English Intensive (30 hours of lessons/week) or
• Teen English + Activity - Summer (6 weeks) and Teen English Intensive

English Requirements:

Students must have a basic English knowledge. Lower level students will be required to choose the Intensive English for the July and August sessions.

A Complete Program

International students receive a complete academic program enabling them to achieve Alberta Education credits which can lead to University entrance. Students successfully completing their studies have the necessary qualifications to apply at most post‐secondary institutions in Canada or the United States. Instructional models are designed to meet students’ individual needs and interests.

Accommodations

Homestay is organized by the High School or by Banff Education Centre, (Both Homestay programs are fairly similar and the price will be the same for the students in this program). Normally students in this program stay with the same host family for the entire year starting from the beginning of July. Although it is not always possible, host families with children studying at the same high school are usually the first families selected. Host families must be visited before they host students, be able to offer a private room, study area and 3 meals per day. Each family must have a police check processed and have a clean record plus offer a warm, comfortable and safe environment for the students.

Application Documents

Applicants must complete and send the following documents:

• Application Package (please choose which high school and choose the Banff Education Centre application package).
• A statement from the principal of your present school stating that you are able to take instruction in English.
• A copy of your latest school report card certified by your school as a true copy of the original. • An English translation of the report card is required.

Program points

• Students increase their level of English and comfort in Canada before the High School year starts.

• Students have the chance to enjoy world class activities in the Rocky Mountains, make friends and use their English skills.

• Build a strong foundation in the the Canadian education system, which will greatly improve the students success at University. Students pursuing a college or university education will benefit from this excellent preparatory program.

• Free University or College councelling.

• Receive a Canadian High school Deploma and transcript and apply to a Canadian University or College.

• Live in a valley surrounded by mountains, amazing activities, people and opportunities.
